Toyota partners with China Momenta on high definition map for autonomous cars

Japanese automaker Toyota Motor Corp. has partnered with China autonomous driving startup Momenta to develop mapping platform high definition (HD) in China’s autonomous driving vehicles, Momenta said in a statement.

Maps are key to allow autonomous vehicles to find themselves. the research arm of Toyota is developing a so-called Automated Mapping Platform (AMP) to produce data accurate and updated map, which he said can also be accessed by the developer of the industry.
Momenta was founded three years ago and is supported by Germany’s Daimler. This testing autonomous cars in Beijing and Suzhou, and will provide a camera-based mapping technology to help commercialize Toyota HD AMP in China, according to the statement.

Toyota vehicles autonomous partnership also includes venture with Softbank Corp. and investment in developer Uber robotaxi ATG.

It has invested $ 400 million in Pony.ai, another autonomous company with Chinese background, and $ 600 million in Chinese rose-call Didi ChuXing giant and a new joint venture to develop mobility services.
